Some natural living tips are a bit extreme, scaring off even the best of us! We decided to narrow it down to the essentials and most powerful rules in order to create a home that promotes mind-body wellness!
Want to live in a home that's toxin free? Its easier than you think with these simple tips!
1. De-clutter space
De-cluttering your home not only promotes mental clarity but it also prevents dust from accumulating in hard to reach places. When we cover our shelves, counter-tops, drawers, and furniture with "unnecessary stuff", we are increasing the chances of dust and toxin accumulation! Keep it simple and make it a goal to de-clutter your surroundings at least once a week.
2. Buy House Plants
House plants are a perfect way to make sure the air we breath is clean. Plants decrease air pollution by eliminating formaldehyde, benzene, trichloroethylene, and airborne biological pollutants. By placing a few plants around the house, you are naturally removing toxins and decreasing your chances of developing allergies and headaches. For best results, choose one of the following: garden mum, spider plant, peace lily, snake plant, bamboo plant, or heart leaf philodendron.
3. Sweep floors 2-3 times a week
Sweeping doesn't have to take long. By giving your living space a quick clean a few times a week, you are eliminating the dust and dirt accumulated from outdoor living. Our shoes transport most of the dust around the home and if not properly eliminated, it may become toxic. Some try to keep shoes away from the living area by setting up a mud room or shoe station at the entrance (this is especially common in Asian cultures). However, if this practice is a bit much for you, sweeping is essential.
4. Open the windows
Let air circulate by opening up windows as often as possible. Indoor air pollution is more toxic than outdoors' but letting fresh air in at least once a day may impede toxic chemicals from accumulating in your home. In addition to increasing natural ventilation in your home, remember to change your air filters every 60-90 days.
5. Start buying natural, non-toxic cleaning products
Instead of throwing out all your current cleaning products, wait until you run out to buy a more toxin-free, natural alternative. Now a days, you can find natural dishwasher soap, laundry detergent, and counter-top cleaning sprays. Not only will you be able to breath better with these alternatives, but your mind, body (and clothes) will thank you for it. Some great brands include Seventh Generation, Mrs. Meyers, and Method. You can also create a DIY cleaning product by mixing vinegar, lemon juice, and baking soda.
